puzzling me a bit. ( used the search function to check if there are an
related posts but found none that answers the following questions)

What info exactly does a sim card contain?
If i were to push up a 960mhz (or any other cell frequency) antenna, ho
would i be able to communicate with it using a standard cellphone?

Basically i want to know what being a cellular service provider is al
about. i know about the astounding licence fees that they pay to set i
up etc etc, but i dont want to know all this. i just want to know how i
works, technically

Google for the pdf file "3GPP 31.102".

Go to your phone's setup menu, and select the frequency band you
wish to use in the network settings. If the band isn't listed,
the phone can't operate on it.

It's going to be a baptism by fire for you. There's no easy way
into the technical stuff. It's complicated and it's precise.

You might find this a useful starting point:

Your best source is the GSM/UMTS technical specs, available for
free download from www.etsi.org While these are heavy reading,
they give you the greatest detail. UMTS is the 3G version of
GSM, and in many respects is a backwards-compatible evolution.
Aspects of the radio layer are radically different.

Once you get started, you'll be able to discern which additional
specs you want. Some GSM-era suggestions to begin with:

01.04
02.03
03.02
03.30
04.08
07.07

The pre-UMTS version of 3GPP 31.102 (SIM spec) is GSM 11.11.

If you're interested in SMS messaging, essentials include:

03.38
03.40
07.05
