I can make a terminal connection to my LG 575 handset over bluetooth. I
want to set up the phone so that it raises a CMTI message when an
incoming SMS message arrives.

I used AT+CNMI=2,1 to set that up, but still got nothing.

Any ideas? Is this even the right place to post?

On the face of it, that looks reasonable. How did the phone
respond? With an "OK"?

If you haven't already, I'd suggest checking out the full range
of values this phone will accept as arguments to this command.
You do this with:

AT+CNMI=?

This will tell you which possibilities are supported by the
phone. I'd be interested in the result. For completeness, I'd
also do:

AT+CNMI?

after your "AT+CNMI=2,1" command to see what values actually
"stuck", and what the arguments you didn't specify (<bm>, <ds>,
and <bfr>) are set to.

Assuming you got an incoming SMS without getting the unsolicited
"+CMTI:" response, was it stored successfully?

It's as good a place as any, although the new misc.phone.mobile
group is looking very bare and unloved.
